The 2025-26 Mentor High School Girls Basketball team had an exhilarating run through the whole season. Their 24-2 overall record was outstanding, and their conference record, which was 14-0, really showed how much effort they put into this season. One of the key players, freshman student Ashlyn McKinney, really showed promise that for the next three years the girls basketball team will be competing at a high level.
As a freshman, McKinney definitely stepped up by proving to be a leader and by scoring as much as she could while also maintaining her confidence. It was a big step for McKinney, especially with the high-tempo offense and full-court defense when competing at the varsity level. McKinney stated, “It’s definitely hard both physically and mentally. We had to do a lot of conditioning and different types of things in practice to get to the level of intensity we were at, and I tried to always be aware of what I’m doing; always being on high alert.” The practice and determination during the preseason proved effective deep into their playoff run.
Their work is determined on how much each player wants and, with the effort and focus, their biggest key to their consistency this season was their high-pressure defense. McKinney commented, “Definitely always our defense. I mean defense is always going to win you a lot of games. Defense leads to offense, so I mean that’s always the key part of every game every season. It’s most of what we work on in practice.”
The team’s senior leader, Nina Rodriguez, was instrumental in taking the team to their success this year. McKinney looks up to Rodriguez and what she did for the team. Rodriguez was a leader, role model, and great friend. McKinney says, “She’s a huge part of the team, she was the captain, she led us through victories and ups and downs. I mean she showed me what I want to be like when I’m a senior.” Nina will be missed in the upcoming season next fall, but the positive influence she had on her younger teammates will live on.
The team ended their 10-year drought after winning their first GCC title this year. Their hustle and determination to grab that title that hadn’t ever been in the county really showed how much each player stepped up and executed their full potential. McKinney said, “I mean it was definitely a big team victory, but a historic victory for the teams before us. They always wanted to do this, so I mean it was just good proof that we can do good things.” The girls really were hungry to get that title, and they succeeded.
Overall, the Mentor High School Girls Basketball team season was one to remember, including them ranking thirty-eighth in the state of Ohio, ending the GCC drought, and entering the regional final on a 22-game winning streak. Led by head coach James Hrusovsky in his eighth season, the year was one to remember.
