Model United Nations (MUN) is an engaging and educational activity where students simulate the roles of delegates from various countries, participating in mock United Nations committees. The goal is to address global issues, debate policies, draft resolutions, and work collaboratively to find solutions. Through MUN, students gain valuable skills in public speaking, negotiation, research, and critical thinking, all while learning about international relations and diplomacy.
Mentor Model UN gives students many opportunities such as:
Involvement – It is always good to be involved in your school and MUN is a perfect way to do so, it comes with an Academic Letter and a cord for graduation!
Travel – If you like to travel some notable places the Mentor team has visited these past few years are Washington D.C., New York City, and Chicago!
Writing – If you have a love for writing, you can write many different policies, laws, and resolutions in MUN
Skills – Joining Model UN offers a chance to develop critical thinking, public speaking, and diplomacy skills
For those interested in joining the high school MUN team, there’s a significant day coming up: Commitment Day, which will be held Tuesday, September 3 at 2:30 p.m. in C-213. This day is crucial for anyone wanting to become part of the team. It will include an introduction to the MUN program, details on the upcoming conferences and meetings, and an opportunity to meet current team members and secretariat. If you’re excited about international affairs and eager to develop your skills, attending Commitment Day is your chance to get involved. Students may still be able to join after this date, but your best opportunity to get involved is to join on Commitment Day. Be sure to come prepared with any questions you may have and a willingness to dive into the world of MUN!
Model U.N. Spring Recap
Want an example of what Model U.N. can offer? Let’s begin last March in the heart of bustling New York City, amidst the towering skyscrapers and the vibrant energy of Times Square. A small delegation from suburban Ohio made its mark at the prestigious New York High School Model UN Conference or NHSMUN. The Mentor team not only showcased their diplomatic skills but also immersed themselves in the rich culture and landmarks of the Big Apple.
This conference was a major success as the team of eleven went to a conference of 2500 kids and emerged with a school delegation award and two individual awards as well. These awards can be seen in the Model UN case found in the lower C-wing.
Among the standout achievers were West Matthews and Charles Partlow, both receiving the esteemed Award of Merit for their outstanding contributions and diplomacy throughout the conference. Their success is a true show of the dedication and hard work they put into their preparation and the high standard upheld by the team as a whole.
Beyond the committee sessions and debates, the Mentor MUNers seized the opportunity to explore the iconic sights and
attractions of New York City. Pushing through bustling crowds, the lights were bright but they never blinded the group as they started sightseeing in Times Square, where the neon lights and giant billboards enhance the city’s vibrant spirit. From the towering buildings to the street performers, the team soaked in the electrifying atmosphere of this iconic landmark.
The next day it was time to venture out again, this time making a visit to the awe-inspiring St. Patrick’s Cathedral which provided a serene contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city streets. Nestled in the heart of Manhattan, this architectural masterpiece was a drastic change from the hustle and bustle to the outside world. Stepping into this church was like stepping into the most beautiful place imaginable. The artwork was extremely intricate and made everyone have a long look at all of the scenes that were being portrayed. St. Patrick’s Cathedral, home to Cardinal Dolan an archdiocese of the Vatican, is one of eleven churches in the United States that is represented in the Vatican.
The next stop was Grand Central Station, a timeless emblem of New York City’s architectural beauty, which welcomed Mentor with open arms. As the team stepped into its cavernous halls, adorned with intricate details and bathed in natural light, they couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the scene that surrounded them. Grand Central Station, with its stunning celestial ceiling and bustling train activity, perfectly embodies New York City’s spirit of arrivals and departures, new beginnings and closing chapters. For this Ohio team, it was a fascinating journey through history and motion, showcasing the city’s rich heritage and ongoing commitment to excellence.
Rockefeller Center beckoned with its iconic Art Deco architecture and bustling energy. From admiring the famous Prometheus
statue to marveling at the views of the iconic ice-skating rink, the Mentor team found themselves immersed in the vibrant atmosphere of this historic landmark. Whether exploring the renowned tower or taking in the sight of Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center provided a captivating glimpse into one of New York City’s most renowned tourist attractions.
Meanwhile, a stone’s throw away, Central Park, nestled amidst Manhattan’s towering skyscrapers, offered a peaceful escape for the Ohio delegates. Strolling along its winding paths, surrounded by lush greenery and calm lakes, they felt a wave of tranquility. The park’s serene beauty contrasted with the city’s bustle, allowing the delegates to recharge before returning to what felt like a small town in Ohio.
As the conference drew to a close and the Ohio delegation bid farewell to the bustling streets of New York City, they left with more than just awards and accolades. Their experience was enriched by the vibrant culture, iconic landmarks, and unforgettable moments that only the Big Apple can offer. With memories to last a lifetime and friendships forged in the heat of debate, the Ohio Model UN team returned home with their heads held high, proud ambassadors of their state, and shining examples of diplomacy in action.
