Mentor High School hosted the homecoming football game last Friday against Medina. Many Mentor students arrived early, filled with anticipation. Both teams were at matching conference standings, 1-0. The game started at 7:00 p.m. The Cardinals scored first, and the student section got more and more enthusiastic as the game continued.
The homecoming king and queen were announced before the game. Benjamin Sherman won homecoming king, and Molly Tenney won homecoming queen. The student section cheered and clapped happily for them.
The student section theme of this game was “Beach Vibes,” so many students wore leis, which are Hawaiian flower necklaces. Some students also wore “aloha shirts” covered in flowers. Students were very excited and enthusiastic about the game.
At 7:06 p.m., the Cardinals scored their first touchdown. Only 6 minutes into the game! The student section roared with cheers and excitement after this play, leaving students and families hopeful for a victory. They stomped in a rumble before the next score, sounding like a drumroll and participated in many common chants, like “Defense” and “M-E-N-T-O-R.”
The Cardinals continued to score. In only the first quarter, the Cardinals scored 35 points. Quarter 2 rolled around and Mentor scored 14 more points.
The halftime show was an amazing performance by Mentor High School Marching Band.
At the end of the halftime performance, the section leaders did an activity known as “rollercoaster” which the entire student section participated in. Rollercoaster is when leaders and students act as if they are strapping into a rollercoaster. Then they lean left and right, forward and back, and stomp. Students were very enthusiastic during this activity and the section roared with satisfaction when it was over.
Ultimately, the Cardinals showed Medina who’s boss. Mentor won 49 to 0, leaving students with high hopes for the rest of the season.
